Small Bible Facts

'LORD' in ancient times was Yahweh. The name refers to God as the self-existent, active one.

Jehovah derives from the Hebrew letters YHVH. Ancient Jews regarded this name as being too sacred to even speak. Instead, they used Adonai, which means 'my Lord.' This is a humungous difference from the way most of us consider His name to be sacred.

'God' in ancient times was 'Elohim.' It indicates His omnipotence, and emphasizes His care and personal concern for His creation and His intimate and close relationship to it.

Jesus was more closely pronounced 'Yeshua'. He was Jewish, with a Jewish/Hebrew name. His name has been translated into other names, with 'Jesus' probably being the most recognized. 'Yeshua' means 'Salvation', and was translated into its literal meaning, instead of the actual name.

The Old Testament contains 613 commandments and laws; 365 are negative and 248 are positive. Those who think that all teaching and preaching must be only positive would not have been pleased with Moses and the Hebrew prophets.

During the Mosaic age, the Levites (Aaron's descendants) were given the duty of the priesthood. Once a year the high priest had to enter the Holy of Holies in order for the sins of the Israelites to be forgiven. Before entering the Holy of Holies, this high priest had to already be forgiven of his sins. He also had to have a string tied to him in which someone outside of the room had to hold on to the other side of. If the high priest did not have his sins forgiven before entering the Holy of Holies, the Lord would strike him dead on the spot. The purpose of the string was so that his dead body could be dragged out of the Holy of Holies, because no one else could enter therein.

In Psalm 119:11 we have the greatest thing on earth (God's Word) laid up in the greatest human vessel (man's heart) with the greatest result (the determined avoidance of sin).

  1. It teaches us.

  3. We are to look forward to His 2nd coming.

OfferingMeaning Implied
grain/meat offeringDone as a gift presented to God as an act of worship. Surprisingly, it was the one offering that did NOT consist of meat. In Hebrew, the word translated 'meat' is 'present.' Because this offering was the product of the soil and the result of human labor, it symbolized the consecration to God of the fruit of one's labor. Its different ingredients symbolized the Holy Spirit, prayer and praise, and the eternal covenant relationship between the worshiper and God.
sin offeringDone for a sin of omission, or for a sin done through ignorance. The sin offering was not a voluntary sacrifice. Read Leviticus 2.
peace offeringGiven for fellowship. Part of this offering was laid on the altar and burned as a gift to the Lord, part was given to the priest, and the remainder was eaten by the worshiper. This offering expressed not only glory, peace and gratitude, but also sharing, joint participation, fellowship and friendship.
burnt offeringExpressed dedication. The term is meant to signify 'that which ascends to Yahweh.' The entire sacrifice was consumed by fire on the altar. Thus, the Israelite was taught that entire consecration is essential to true worship.
