May 2008 Dental Awareness Periodontal (GUM) Disease
Did you know that good oral hygiene is a step toward a healthier life? Given that research suggests potential links between the bacteria that cause Periodontal (gum) Disease and systemic diseases, prevention of periodontal disease is an important step in overall health.
Periodontal Disease is a serious bacterial infection and how your body responds to this infection is important. It is also the most common disease affecting people besides the common cold! 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease, but the majority do not realize it. Periodontal Disease may increase your risk for other health concerns including:
diabetes
cardiovascular disease
stroke
lung infections
preterm, low birth weight infants
respiratory diseases
Evidence links gum disease to other health concerns including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases that are life threatening. Periodontal disease can be a disfiguring disease. Gum disease starts in between the teeth. The infection spreads from the gum into the bone and can cause permanent damage. Your gums swell in size and become very red and inflamed. They may bleed very readily, your teeth may shift and dark spaces in between your teeth may begin to show. The teeth become loose and may need to be removed.
Early detection as with other diseases is the key to successful treatment. Your dental professional will routinely perform a gum disease screening exam. It is recommended at least once a year by the ADA (American Dental Association). A routine cleaning is not enough by itself to treat periodontal disease and it's not just about your teeth anymore!
